  • Combination therapy that uses oral antibiotics and topical medication (often retinoids) may help in managing the acne problems.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Estrogen-containing birth pills or medication that decreases the effects of male hormones (antiandrogens) may help certain women.   • Corticosteroid injections may be used to treat large, painful acne lesions. These injections can ease the pain and help clear large lesions in a quickly manner.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • One systematic treatment that you may have heard about is the use of isotretinoin. This is the only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat severe resistance nodular cystic acne.\u00a0A patient who is pregnant, or may become pregnant, must not take isotretinoin. The risk of a severe birth defect is extremely high and even taking this medication for a short time can cause severe birth defects. While a patient is taking isotretinoin, a dermatologist monitors the patient for physical and psychological effects and for this reason it is of utmost importance for the patient to keep all follow-up appointments with the dermatologist.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
