Many individuals with eczema also have\u00a0hay fever\u00a0and\/or\u00a0asthma\u00a0or have family members with those conditions. Some factors can trigger a flare-up of eczema or make eczema worse, but they do not cause the condition.\u00a0Eczema triggers\u00a0include stress, skin irritants (including soaps,\u00a0skin care products, or some fabrics), allergens, and climate\/environment.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space]<h3 class=\"box-header no-border\">What are the symptoms of Atopic Eczema?<\/h3>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The appearance of eczema can vary from person to person. In adults, eczema occurs most frequently on the hands and elbows, and in &#8220;bending&#8221; areas such as the inside of the elbows and back of the\u00a0knees. In young children, eczema is often seen on the elbows,\u00a0knees, face, neck, and scalp. Signs and symptoms of atopic eczema include:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Itchiness<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Skin redness<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dry, scaly, or crusted skin that might become thick and leathery from long-term scratching<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Formation of small, fluid-filled\u00a0blisters\u00a0that might ooze when scratched<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Infection of the areas where the skin has been broken<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space]<h3 class=\"box-header no-border\">How is Atopic Eczema treated?<\/h3>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Atopic eczema can be treated with\u00a0medications, including over-the-counter creams and ointments containing the steroid\u00a0hydrocortisone\u00a0(for example,\u00a0Cortizone-10, Cort-Aid, Dermarest Eczema,\u00a0Neosporin\u00a0Eczema). These products may help control the\u00a0itching, swelling, and redness associated with eczema. Prescription-strength\u00a0cortisone\u00a0creams, as well as cortisone pills and shots, are also used for more severe cases of eczema.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space]<h3 class=\"box-header no-border\">How is Atopic Eczema treated?<\/h3>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For people with mild-to-moderate eczema, topical immunomodulators (TIMs) can help. TIMS &#8212; including brand name products\u00a0Protopic\u00a0and\u00a0Elidel\u00a0&#8212; work by altering the body&#8217;s immune response to allergens, preventing flare ups. However, in 2005, the FDA warned doctors to prescribe Elidel and Protopic with caution due to concerns over a possible\u00a0cancer\u00a0risk associated with their use. The two medications have an FDA &#8220;black box&#8221; warning on their packaging to alert doctors and patients to these potential risks. The warning advises doctors to prescribe short-term use of Elidel and Protopic only after other available\u00a0eczema treatments\u00a0have failed in adults and children over the age of 2. Phototherapy is another treatment that helps some people with eczema. The ultraviolet light waves found in sunlight have been shown to benefit certain skin disorders, including eczema.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space]<h3 class=\"box-header no-border\">Can Atopic Eczema be prevented?<\/h3>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, there is no effective strategy for preventing atopic eczema, but the symptoms of the condition can improve.
